Purposes

The purposes of the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies are to:

1. Provide intensive study in selected areas of concentration.
2. Enhance knowledge and skills in health, physical education, kinesiology, and sport management professionals.
3. Provide an educational foundation for scientific inquiry to inform practice and research.
4. Provide opportunities for developing the skills necessary for working with peers, students, clients, and patients from varied backgrounds and cultures, with diverse value systems.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission to the Master of Science degree program in Health and Kinesiology, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

1. Meet all University admission requirements.
2. Complete a baccalaureate degree in health, kinesiology, sport management or a related field. Students who pursue the concentration in Exercise Science must have completed undergraduate courses in human anatomy and physiology (lecture + lab, 4 hours) and exercise physiology (3 hrs).
3. Achieve a cumulative undergraduate GPA between 2.50 and 2.99 for provisonal status, or 3.0 or higher for regular admission status. 

NOTE: A student admitted under provisional status must earn a 3.0 GPA on the first 9 hours of graduate level courses taken toward the degree. Once this requirement is met, the student is eligible for their status to be changed to regular status and continue toward degree completion. Provisional status students who do not meet this requirment will be dismissed from the program.

Requirements for Degree

All candidates for a degree must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on courses in the degree, and complete a thesis or a satisfactory score on the master’s comprehensive examination.

Grade Retention Policy: Any graduate student, who makes a grade of “D” or “F” on more than 6 hours of “C” grades in any course taken for graduate credit will be dismissed from the program and will be ineligible to register for further graduate courses in the department. A student dismissed from the program because of extenuating, non-academic reasons may appeal to the dean for readmission.
