Degree Requirements for Creative Writing Concentration

The Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Creative Writing is a thesis-based program requiring the completion of 36 semester hours of graduate credit. The curriculum consists of 15 semester hours of core requirements and 21 semester hours of elective coursework, of which a minimum of 18 semester hours must be completed in courses at the 6000 level.

Elective Courses (21 Hours)

Students must take twenty-one (21) semester hours of electives, eighteen (18) hours must be taken at the 6000-level.

All Candidates for the M.A. in English Must:

Demonstrate knowledge of a world language or language structure either through six (6) hours of undergraduate course work in one language, through completion of an approved graduate-level course on language structures, through demonstrated knowledge of a major computer language (such as C++, XML, or Java), or through passing the Princeton examination. The language requirement is waived for international students whose native language is not English.
Complete nine (9) hours of graduate course work in three broad literary periods: (1) ancient, medieval, and early modern literatures, (2) Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century literature, and (3) Twentieth-Century and contemporary literatures.
Pass all parts of the M.A. comprehensive examination in English.
