Degree Requirements for Professional Writing Concentration

The Master of Arts in English with a concentration in Professional Writing is offered in both thesis and non-thesis options and requires the completion of 36 semester hours of graduate credit. The concentration consists of 24 semester hours of core requirements and 12 semester hours of elective coursework. A minimum of 18 semester hours must be completed at the 6000 level; for students in the non-thesis track, a minimum of 21 semester hours must be completed at the 6000 level.

Required for all M.A Candidates:

ENGL 6480 - GRADUATE STUDIES SEMINAR 3 Credit Hour(s)
Complete 9 hours of graduate course work in three broad literary periods: (1) Ancient, medieval, and early modern literatures, (2) Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century literature, and (3) Twentieth-Century and contemporary literatures.

Non-Thesis Core Requirements:

All Candidates for the M.A. in English Must:

Demonstrate knowledge of a world language or language structure either through six (6) hours of undergraduate course work in one language, through completion of an approved graduate-level course on language structures, through demonstrated knowledge of a major computer language (such as C++, XML, or Java), or through passing the Princeton examination. The language requirement is waived for international students whose native language is not English.
Pass all parts of the M.A. comprehensive examination in English.
