Social Work, BA

The undergraduate social work program is a professional program that has been designed to prepare students for social work practice in rural and small communities. The program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and follows a generalist practice model in which students are provided the knowledge and skills needed to work with clients with a variety of social problems on multiple levels.

All courses with a Social Work prefix (required or electives) are used in the calculation of the major field average.

G General Education Requirement (GER). See the GER  section of this catalog for the list of courses that fulfill this requirement if no specific course is listed. Honors equivalents are acceptable for all GER courses.

Courses needed prior to acceptance into Professional Standing. SW 2030  and SW 2040 , SW 2050  and SOC 2120 , SW 2030  and BIOL 1070 , and SW 2040  and BIOL 1070  may be concurrent registration.

Enrollment in SW 4970  and SW 4980  requires the completion of all courses required in the degree, a minimum of a 2.0 cumulative GPA, and a minimum degree GPA of 2.5, or permission of the Department Head.

Students who submit application for professional standing will be admitted without delay when they meet the following requirements, and there is no waiting list:

  1. Achievement of a degree GPA of 2.50 or higher.
  2. Completion of an acceptable criminal background check.
  3. Successful review of the Application for Admission to Professional Status by the Social Work faculty.
  4. Earning a grade of “C” or higher in ENGL 1020 , and all Social Work courses undertaken.
  5. Submission of formal documentation and completed volunteer form demonstrating 20 service/ volunteer hours (See the Social Work Handbook for a list of approved types of service/ volunteer hours and the required form).
  6. Submission of certificate of attendance for the mandatory Social Work Program Orientation.
